Statement from Secretary of State Jena Griswold on Trump Elections Executive Order

Denver, March 31, 2026 - Today President Donald Trump signed an Executive Order mandating the creation of a nationwide citizenship eligibility list and requiring the United States Postal Service to only receive mail ballots from specific individuals. Colorado Secretary of State Jena Griswold has issued the following statement:

“This Executive Order is undemocratic, unconstitutional, and dangerous. Trump once again is trying to unlawfully exert influence on states’ elections in an effort to hold onto power in the upcoming midterm elections, this time by creating a Trump voter list. While Trump says mail ballots are illegitimate, he has voted by mail ballot for years. The Constitution is clear: states oversee elections, not Trump. We look forward to this unconstitutional overreach being stopped in court.”

This is the second Executive Order Donald Trump has issued directly related to election administration. The previous order has been the subject of numerous legal challenges and largely enjoined by three Federal Courts.

In Colorado, every active voter is mailed a ballot. Eligible individuals who register up to eight days before Election Day are sent a mail ballot, and eligible individuals may register to vote and vote in person up until polls close at 7:00 PM on Election Day.
