For primary elections in Colorado, the order of names on the ballot for any race is done in groups. The first group is candidates who accessed the ballot via party assembly. The second group is candidates who accessed the ballot via petition. For races where more than one candidate petitioned on, state statute (1-4-103, C.R.S.) says that the order of petitioning candidates names' on the ballot should be established by lot. For the 2026 Primary Election, there was more than one petitioning candidate in the following races: US House-District 8 (Democratic) and Attorney General (Democratic). A lot drawing was held at the Colorado Secretary of State’s Office on April 29, 2026 to determine the ballot order for those races. The lot drawing was conducted by Department of State staff and witnessed by campaign representatives.
